Bohlin Cywinski Jackson Announces the Promotion of Patricia Culley and David Miller to Principal

Join us in congratulating and celebrating Patricia Culley, AIA, LEED AP BD+C and David Miller, AIA for their leadership and valuable contributions to our practice.

Patricia Culley, AIA, LEED AP BD+C, Well AP | Pittsburgh
In the nearly two decades since Patricia joined Bohlin Cywinski Jackson, she has championed a holistic design ethos that balances integrity, sustainability, and beauty. Patricia is a uniquely talented designer and an impeccable leader who embraces the technical, programmatic, and performative challenges in every project. These are qualities that were highlighted in her receipt of an AIA Young Architects Award in 2021.

From her early design work on the California Institute of Technology’s Schlinger Laboratory and Marquez Hall at the Colorado School of Mines, to her skilled management of Carnegie Mellon University’s ANSYS Hall, to her ongoing leadership of our work with the University of Virginia and the ClearWater Conservancy, Patricia champions the quality design of environments that educate and enrich the communities they serve. Demonstrating a singular clarity in communication, presentation, and promotion of our firm, Patricia’s meticulous interviews, compelling client presentations, strategic marketing, and topical lectures contribute significantly to the elevation of our practice and our work. This has included presentations on design, sustainability, and materiality at over 40 speaking engagements including the ILFI Living Futures Conference, USGBC Greenbuild, and the AIA Conference on Architecture.

Notably, Patricia orchestrated the successful completion of the Frick Environmental Center in Pittsburgh and subsequently led our efforts through the rigorous Living Building certification process. The project has been recognized with national design awards, an AIA Committee on Education Honor award, and an AIA COTE Top Ten Plus award. This wealth of knowledge is deftly applied to work that varies broadly in scale, program, and circumstance; from a Living Building-Core, standalone classroom at the Waldorf School of Pittsburgh to the ongoing, net-zero ready, 180,000 square-foot Quaker Valley High School in Leetsdale, PA. Patricia’s work is driving national dialogues on innovation in education, resiliency, and design.

David Miller, AIA | Seattle
Throughout his more than 20-year career with Bohlin Cywinski Jackson, David has consistently demonstrated exceptional leadership in design on several of the firm’s most complex projects, succeeded in business development and securing new work, and nurtured our firm culture through his enthusiasm and engagement with design teams.

After joining BCJ’s San Francisco office in 2002, David migrated north to Seattle in 2003 and quickly became an integral part of the Grand Teton Discovery + Visitor Center team. The development of its innovative structural system of prefabricated log frames and engineered beams was largely due to David’s design and technical abilities. Our longstanding relationship with Canadian timber fabricator Spearhead Timberworks began through working with David on the Teton Visitor Center and has since led to more than a dozen project collaborations.

On subsequent projects like the Whistler Residence, with its impressive cantilevered swimming pool and exuberant forms, David demonstrated his ability to take on a different building type and approach complex design challenges with ease. He has moved effortlessly between custom single-family residences, cultural and civic buildings, and mixed-use high rises. In each instance, David has built strong relationships with high profile clients that have consistently led to fruitful, long-term collaborations. His work with Howard Hughes on the Ae’o Tower led to working with Related California on the Tasman East project, and to current projects with JL Capital on new mixed-use and single-family residential projects in Hawaii.

Beyond his project work, David is appreciated for a great sense of humor and cultivates a positive, enthusiastic environment for his team and the entire Seattle office.
