University of Florida, Malachowsky Hall Tops Out

The project team recently celebrated the completion of the 7-story, 263,000 square-foot building’s structure.

Bohlin Cywinski Jackson team members were honored to join Ajax Building Company and approximately 300 workers across a variety of trades, as well as invited guests, to officially recognize this significant milestone after a year and a half of construction. After hoisting a ceremonial tree atop the final beam at the building’s roof level, the team gathered in what will be the project’s central atrium to celebrate.

When complete in 2023, Malachowsky Hall will provide a hub for students, faculty, and researchers working on advances in computing, communication, and cyber-technologies. The project is organized around a vertical commons that creates physical and visual connections between colleges and departments across its seven floors, balancing flexibility and shared amenities with private spaces for individual departments to accommodate focused work and research. Targeting LEED Gold, the project employs integrated strategies to increase building performance and occupant comfort, including the use of electrochromic glass in its trapezoidal façade, allowing ample natural light while shielding occupants from direct glare.
