Harmony In The Woods

Hawley, Pennsylvania

A stage and amphitheater nestled in the hillside of a forested clearing offer an immersive experience for both performers and audience.

Because of the wooded location, it was important to minimize disturbances to the trees—only removing what was absolutely necessary—and install bare minimum power. © Nicholas Snyder
The stage is built on piers where possible, rather than a full foundation, to reduce its impact on the site and allow effective and natural rainwater management. © Nicholas Snyder
Readily sourced materials include wood glulam and steel beams, black-stained cedar walls, and polycarbonate panels, all of which highlight how one can create a striking design with a modest budget. © Nicholas Snyder

Harmony in the Woods

Harmony Presents is a nonprofit focused on showcasing music and performing arts to the Pocono Mountain region and neighboring areas. They approached our practice to master plan a wooded 14-acre property donated to the nonprofit and to create a new performance venue that could serve as an integral part of the region’s fabric by supporting local artists.

Visitors arrive at a gravel parking lot and follow one of two trails to the venue. One provides a forested journey by foot, revealing the stage in glimpses through the trees, while the other accommodates a golf cart valet for full accessibility or emergency vehicle access. Separating vehicular traffic from the performance space reduces disruptive noises and light, enhances the arrival experience, and emphasizes the natural atmosphere of this unique cultural setting.

The structure’s design is simple. An angled roof shields rain and sun, projects the natural acoustics, and is engineered to accommodate a future green roof, as funding permits, to further blend into its surroundings. The stage is separated from a greenroom by large, sliding polycarbonate panels that act as a backdrop and provide privacy to the performers. Movable, wireless color-changing track lights—which can be controlled by a phone or tablet app—are used on the upstage sliding wall, creating flexibility without additional hardwired systems.

Amphitheater seating uses stone sourced from a nearby quarry. Each of the five tiers is connected by paths where possible, rather than steps, to increase accessibility. Mats are inserted under the lawn at the base of the stage to accommodate wheelchairs.

The stage and amphitheater are respectful of their surroundings and provide a unique opportunity for discovery—where local hikers can, and have, stumbled across the clearing—and incorporate nature and wellness into a cultural experience. Harmony in the Woods provides an elegant building the community can be proud of and fully enjoy.
