Designing for Art: A Tour of Two Unique Spaces

Rather than replicate the traditional Hawaiian character of our clients’ main residence, the new spaces have a modern perspective, following the cues of the art collection while respecting the surrounding natural context. The studio is located along the edge of the steep site, with three levels that step down the slope. The property’s natural terracing offers each level its own private entry. The gallery is a curved, copper-clad volume of articulated panels, linked to the guest spaces by a structural glass walkway. On the studio side, the top two levels contain guest quarters and a home office. The ground floor is devoted to an innovative system for art storage that uses pivoting walls for display and storage. The primary gallery’s large openings frame views of the surrounding landscape, while its orientation on the site and precisely positioned overhangs mitigate the tropical sun.
