University of Florida, Institute for Agricultural Innovation Reaches Significant Construction Milestone
The 50,000 square-foot hub for advanced agricultural research is designed to foster collaboration and innovative solutions that support Florida agriculture.
Project team members gathered last week to sign and place the final steel beam of the Institute for Agricultural Innovation (IAI), completing the building’s structural frame. The building’s scale is apparent from its structure and concrete tilt-up panels, some measuring up to 32 feet high, with a corrugated finish outlining the exterior of the future IAI. The vertical corrugated texture draws inspiration from the region’s agricultural vernacular and the linear patterns of cultivated fields. The tilt-up panels were cast on-site while other work progressed simultaneously, supporting an efficient construction schedule and a rapid building enclosure. Institute for Agricultural Innovation Leadership, Professor and Center Director, Soil Fertility and Water Quality Dr. Jack Rechcigl, and Associate Center Director and Professor of Horticulture/Weed Science Dr. Nathan Boyd, joined the celebration.
The IAI is located on the University of Florida’s 475-acre Gulf Coast Research and Education Center campus near Tampa, an area known for horticultural research and education. When it opens for the fall 2027 semester, the new facility will offer students state-of-the-art labs and workshops, a multi-use forum, offices, gathering areas, and an improved, pedestrian-friendly campus. A shared “porch” underneath an extensive 50-foot-long overhang will provide space for students to showcase their work and serve as a pre-function area for industry events.
Designed to achieve Florida Green Building Coalition Gold certification, the project features deep roof overhangs, along with large cantilevers, particularly along the south-facing curtainwall, that will help reduce solar heat gain and glare. It will also integrate stormwater management and native plantings within a new green space.
Congratulations to the project team, including Walbridge (Construction Manager), Walter P. Moore (Structural Engineer), NV5 (Civil Engineer and Landscape Architect), Affiliated Engineers (MEPFP), Research Facilities Design (Laboratory Consultant), Siebein Associates (Acoustics), and Holmes Keogh Associates (Code Consultants), for achieving this important milestone!
