Penn Lincoln Opens Its Doors to the Wilkinsburg Community

ACTION-Housing Inc. celebrated the completion of its most recent affordable housing building, located in the historic business district of Wilkinsburg, Pennsylvania.

“Every Pennsylvanian deserves a safe place to call home.”
Lieutenant Governor Austin Davis

ACTION-Housing Inc. and Hosanna House leadership, regional and local representatives, project team members, and guests gathered to commemorate the official opening of Penn Lincoln Apartments, an affordable housing project with residences and retail space in Wilkinsburg on the site of the historic Penn-Lincoln Hotel. The project features 41 units with one-, two-, and three-bedroom layouts for households earning at or below 60% of the Area Median Income.

During the event, Lena Andrews (CEO, ACTION-Housing, Inc.), Leon E. Haynes III (Founding CEO, Hosanna House), Lieutenant Governor Austin Davis, State Senator Jay Costa, and Mayor of Wilkinsburg Dontae Comans, shared remarks about the project’s positive impact on the surrounding community. Attendees later toured the building to see firsthand what tenants will experience as they begin to move in.

Reminiscent of the historic hotel, Penn Lincoln Apartments is clad with a deeply layered red brick facade that thoughtfully responds to its neighborhood context. The ground level features 10,000 square feet of commercial space, further integrating the project into a tightly knit community enlivened by locally run businesses. From the outside, a glass volume on the second floor frames the community room, while interior bridges cross a daylight-filled, multi-story entry lobby, connecting the east and west wings. Each unit features maple millwork and ample daylight with views of the surrounding community and landscape beyond.

Congratulations to our client, ACTION-Housing Inc. and community partner, Hosanna House. Additional thanks to our project team PJ Dick (Construction Manager), Atlantic Engineering Services (Structural Engineering), Iams Consulting LLC (MEP), and BABICHacoustics (Acoustics).
