ASU Media and Immersive eXperience Center Honored at AIA Arizona Awards Gala

The project received a design award and the Goodwin Collaboration Award at AIA Arizona’s annual ceremony.

"The terracotta façade was beautifully detailed, and the architectural treatment of the solar panels sends a powerful sustainability message. The project was transformative in the creation of ... a significant public gathering space in the heart of downtown Mesa."
AIA Arizona Jury

Designed in collaboration with Holly Street Studio, the Media and Immersive eXperience Center provides a cross-disciplinary environment for the next generation of cinematic and digital storytellers at Arizona State University. With theaters, fabrication labs, makerspaces, and film and art studios, including a 3,000 square-foot enhanced immersion studio, the building provides an extraordinary array of spaces, tools, and technologies for students and faculty to create and share their work. Terracotta panels in varied configurations wrap the exterior in response to nearby mid-century building context in downtown Mesa, recalling both the dynamism of digital patterns and a theater curtain that parts at the central community spaces to reveal the activity within.

Beyond its immersive creative environments, the MIX Center and adjacent plaza anchor a welcoming civic gathering place in Mesa, where University and community life come together. In recognizing the MIX Center with the Goodwin Collaboration Award, the AIA Arizona awards jury praised the successful partnership between ASU and the City of Mesa, as well as across the project team, stating that “the MIX Center is a great example of what can be accomplished through collaborative work.” The MIX Center project team included DPR Construction, Dibble Engineering, Arup, Colwell Shelor Landscape Architecture, Apeiro Lighting Design, NV5, and Ecological Environments.
