The Wilkinson Building, Pratt School of Engineering, Duke University
The new building for Pratt School of Engineering at Duke University fosters a spirit of invention by integrating a community of research neighborhoods with undergraduate study. Undergraduate active learning classrooms, maker spaces, and an entrepreneurship center are enlivened by transparency, clear circulation paths, and open, dynamic gathering spaces. Each decision made during the design process of the building was to support and encourage collaboration and connection not only in the engineering department but to the larger industry as well.
Located on an historic site between the Historic West Campus Quad and newer structures for Pratt and the Campus Library system, the site design includes a working maker courtyard for assembly, demonstration, and display of student projects. The placement of the building serves as a connection between the historic campus and its newer, state-of-the-art facilities.
