Kent State University, DI Hub Receives AIA Pittsburgh Honor Award
The Design Innovation Hub, a cross-disciplinary makerspace at the university’s main Kent, Ohio campus, was celebrated at the 2022 Design Pittsburgh event at Nova Place.
“The fluidity of the overall massing allows for a well-considered pathway for students, and honors the 1970 architecture while bringing it into the now. It has very clear organization for such a large building and thoughtful coordination with all the building systems. We love the section studies and the natural light is fantastic!”
The Design Innovation Hub (DI Hub) at Kent State University was honored in AIA Pittsburgh’s annual design awards ceremony, recognizing exemplary architecture in the region and by regional firms. The DI Hub is a collaborative, “owned by all, shared by all” environment that brings together students, faculty, and experts from diverse disciplines under one roof. Revitalizing Kent State’s 1970s-era, John Andrews-designed art building at the center of campus, the project is the focal point for a University-wide maker ecosystem. By stripping the building to its original structure and creating a light-filled and interconnected environment, the DI Hub continues a legacy of creative exploration while providing a flexible framework for the next generation of innovators at Kent State.
Project team members included Kent State’s Office of the University Architect, Domokur Architects, Gilbane Building Co., Nelson Byrd Woltz, Knight & Stolar, Scheeser Buckley Mayfield, and Barber & Hoffman.
