Gallatin Residence Wins AIA Philadelphia Design Award
Located on former farmland in the upper Hudson Valley, Gallatin Residence is a weekend home with a strong connection to the surrounding landscape.
"Many of the jury wanted to vacation in this house, but what attracted most to this project was the minimalistic building form, connection to the breathtaking views, and use of thermal mass and solar gain to temper energy demands."
We’re honored to have Gallatin Residence recognized with a Merit Award at AIA Philadelphia’s annual celebration on Thursday, November 13th, recognizing “firms that create the legacy of excellence in design and toast the future of the architecture profession in Philadelphia.”
The residence, located on a 100-acre property our client has tended to for many years, is a modern, pavilion-like country home that offers flexibility for a quiet weekend visit or large gathering. Gallatin Residence’s deference to the surrounding landscape is evident on arrival: accessed via a curved entry drive, the slim roofline is barely visible above waving meadow grasses and the gentle slope of a knoll. Working with Prutting + Co., we tucked the home into the knoll, allowing lower level sleeping areas to sit at grade with the meadow. Upper level living areas open to spectacular views across the Hudson River Valley to the Catskills beyond. The design integrates a natural, unadorned palette of timber, Douglas fir siding, board-formed concrete, white oak, and local bluestone.
The 2025 jury included Amy Mielke, AIA, LEED GA (Ennead Architects), Gwenned Murray (VMDO), Laura Eder, AIA (ESG), Ameet Hiremath, AIA, LEED AP (TenBerke), and Joyce Raybuck, AIA (BNIM). Learn more about the project below.
