Celebrating a Milestone for the Hamer Community Conservation Center
ClearWater Conservancy members recently gathered to mark the completion of the timber frame for its first permanent headquarters, an important step in the creation of a new community center in the heart of the Spring Creek Watershed.
The final Douglas fir beam was recently placed atop the future Hamer Community Conservation Center, marking a significant construction milestone. ClearWater Conservancy (CWC) board and staff, together with the project team, held a small topping-out ceremony, where guests signed the beam and watched as it was lifted into place. The future 10,400 square-foot Hamer Community Conservation Center is the realization of a longtime goal to establish a hub for environmental education, community engagement, and conservation efforts in Central Pennsylvania.
Founded as a grassroots initiative in the late 70s, ClearWater Conservancy has grown into an established organization focused on environmental stewardship through educational outreach and land conservation. In 2021, the Conservancy acquired the current 10-acre site. Set on the footprint of a former barn on the property, the project design honors the original structure through its shape and preserves its legacy by creatively integrating salvaged and repurposed materials. Offices, multipurpose workspaces, a library, and a community learning center will be located within the Conservation Center. The project will also include an outdoor demonstration area for public events.
The building embodies the Conservancy’s commitment to environmental stewardship by incorporating significant sustainability strategies. Erosion and sediment controls have been implemented during construction to maintain the water quality of the nearby Spring Creek. Once completed, the Conservation Center will feature solar panels and a geothermal system for temperature control.
The project team includes Alexander Building Construction.
