Halls Ridge Knoll Residence

California

Sited in a nature preserve in Monterey County, this vacation retreat consisting of a main residence, workshop and pool house, overlooks an expansive panorama of San Clemente mountain ridges.

Fieldstone walls flank the winding approach as it meanders between oak groves, and rise to form the inner boundaries of the buildings, organizing and anchoring them along the sloping site. Simple timber frames above the stone walls support naturally weathered copper roofs over cedar-clad interiors. Screens of industrial glazing open the interior outward to the landscape, while sliding doors and operable windows provide access to shaded wood decks and summer breezes.

A series of rustic structures along a scenic ridge engage the landscape with deliberation, creating an elegant platform for celebrating this magical site.
