House on Lake Tahoe
Nevada
Sited along the north shore of Lake Tahoe, this new lakefront house is oriented parallel to the shore to take advantage of expansive views of the lake and surrounding Sierra Nevada Mountains. On approach from the drive, the cedar siding boards of the landside facade appear to be pulled apart, revealing a slotted view of the lake through a glazed entry framed by a pair of cut-stone chimneys. The chimneys pass through a skylight on the roof ridge.
A path of bluestone pavers leads to the entry, which contains a stair that separates the two large fireplaces and gives access to both levels of the house. The lower level contains bedrooms placed along the lakeside and a game room for the family's three children. The upper level is a tall, glazed volume structured with steel trusses, glulam rafters and wood decking. Glazed at both ends, the upper level features a guest suite at the east end, an open living and dining space, a library and study along the north side, and a kitchen at the west end. A pair of wood and glass sliding doors opens off the living and dining space onto a large south facing deck with a stair that leads down to a small private beach, pier and boathouse.
