EBU 3b Computer Science and Engineering Building

University of California, San Diego, San Diego, California

The new EBU 3b Computer Science and Engineering Building is located on the UCSD campus. The four-story, 87,000 gross square foot building houses the Computer Science and Engineering Department (77,000 g.s.f.), as well as the Warren College Provost?s Office (10,000 g.s.f.).

The L-shaped building is situated on Voigt Drive at the Warren Mall, a pedestrian mall that connects a number of student residences to the library, a campus focal point. Two main facades define a new academic court, while the southern end faces Warren Mall. Here, a pivotal landmark tower anchors the building to the mall, marking the ground level entrance to the Warren College Provost Office, which occupies the south wing of the first floor.

Entrances from the mall and the academic court access the undergraduate instructional labs located on the lower level. A polygonal, extruded skylight provides natural daylight to the lobby and corridor, while the Voigt Drive grade slopes down to allow for windows into the instructional labs.

A backlit, translucent sea green elliptical canopy marks the inner corner entrance from the academic court to the Computer Science and Engineering Department's two-story lobby. On the main level, the lobby provides reception space for the department's large conference room, located behind large, pivoting wood panels. The department's technical support and server rooms are discreetly located on the first floor of the north wing close to the loading dock.

In the main lobby, a monumental stair leads to the Computer Science and Engineering Department's administrative offices, located off the second floor lobby. On the second through fourth floors, offices and research labs of varying sizes are located along the exterior walls, allowing ample natural lighting, a high priority of the client.

The circulation system expands at the center and at the ends, opening up various activity spaces. Building elements throughout reflect the elliptical shape and sea-green color of the translucent main entrance canopy, recalling the local marine environment. Activity spaces facilitate communication among the researchers, while offices and research labs placed along active circulation paths both encourage social exchanges between researchers, and at the same time provide privacy. On the fourth floor, the central research interaction space and conference room open onto an outdoor terrace with scenic views into the canyons.
