Adobe, a San Francisco software company, employs talented people in diverse specialties. A major design goal for the $20 million headquarters project was to create a centralized workplace that would foster cross-pollination of ideas and engender a feeling of home for the growing company in a renovated historic heavy timber and brick building. The 1905 building is a registered Historic Landmark. The large floorplates are subdivided with massive brick bearing walls and structured by a grid of old-growth heavy timber. At the center of the building is a lightwell around which the plan is organized. This lightwell terminates at the first floor ceiling into a skylight bringing daylight to the center of the building. This area at the first floor is the company 'Town Hall'. The qualities of light, space and historic structure, and the integration of technology throughout the building facilitates a humane, interactive workplace for Adobe's employees.
