Student Housing
St. Mary's College of Maryland, Maryland
Bohlin Cywinski Jackson has worked with St. Mary's for nearly twenty years providing both master planning and architectural design services. The north campus of the College adjoins the site of Maryland's original colonial settlement, and BCJ recommended that, in the tradition of many great academic campuses, new buildings take their character from the indigenous architecture of the Tidewater region.
Thus, these new townhouses for 160 students are arranged in a crescent wrapping around an existing running track. The building is positioned on axis with the playing field and track, its "head" is aligned with the new science facility's central passageway (designed by Bohlin Cywinski Jackson at the same time), and chimneys flank a major portal to an adjacent student commons and housing complex. Removed from other buildings and dense human activity, the "tail" of the crescent is made more delicate and graceful, as if slipping into neighboring fields and woods. A real and memorable place has been made by the spirited combination of architectural precedent and programmatic response.
