Newport Beach Civic Center and Park broke ground on May 11, 2010. The complex will include a new city hall, an addition to the current library, a new parking structure and extensive public open space. City Manager Dave Kiff led the event, which was highlighted by an address from Keith Curry, the City's Mayor. During the ceremony Curry stated "Special places like this do not happen without vision, and this project reflects the vision of our entire community ... and the thoughtful implementation of many people."
The Civic Center site overlooks the Pacific Ocean. To protect the ocean views for the surrounding community, 280,000 cubic yards of material will be hauled off site in 20,000 truckloads during the next six months. Construction of the 450-space parking garage will begin in December. Construction of the addition to the library and the new Civic Center will begin in early 2011. The project is currently scheduled for completion in late 2012.
