Apple Shinsaibashi Opens with Record Sales

June 8, 2004, Osaka, Japan

Apple Shinsaibashi, in Osaka, Japan, opened to great success, recording Apple Computer's highest single day sales in the 40 months of their retail store development. This is the sixth High-Profile store that Bohlin Cywinski Jackson has completed for Apple.

The craftsmanship and execution surpassed expectations as Apple's Senior Vice President for Retail, Ron Johnson, boasted it to be their best store ever. A first of its kind, the circular glass staircase, which is prominently featured near the store entry, was admired and applauded as an object of utility, structural ingenuity and sculptural beauty. Suspended from 1/2-inch stainless steel rods, and designed as a continuous arcing glass beam spanning between floors, the stair is a breathtaking engineering feat, thanks to James O'Callaghan and Seele (circular glass stair fabricators and installers). Large bead-blasted stainless steel panels form the store's minimal exterior. A corner entrance, a stainless steel interior lobby, and an automated frameless slot display window further accentuate this unique store design.
