Caltech Opens Schlinger Laboratory for Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, On Target for LEED Gold

March 9, 2010

Jean-Lou Chameau, President of California Institute of Technology, dedicated the Warren and Katharine Schlinger Laboratory for Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, a new multidisciplinary research laboratory that sets the highest standards for sustainable design yet for the institution. The 62,000 sq. ft. facility maximizes views from laboratory spaces to enhance productivity and quality of life for researchers and students. The lab is expected to receive LEED Gold certification and achieve more points under the LEED system than any other building on campus to date. The Schlinger Chemistry Building features many sophisticated building technologies that contribute to its resource and energy efficiencies; it is forecasted to use 30% less water than similar facilities and 17.5 - 21% less energy. Bohlin Cywinski Jackson crafted the research building to provide a high quality of life for occupants, with special attention paid to lighting controls and natural light: 90% of occupants will work in daylit areas. The laboratory also features a high proportion of recycled and locally sourced materials, as well as a drought tolerant landscape and on-site dispersal of stormwater.

"The Institute is recognized for having made some of the most significant scientific achievements of the past century in chemistry and chemical engineering with three Nobel laureates in chemistry currently in residence. The Schlinger Laboratory will help to position Caltech for continued leadership in this critical area, helping to shape the future. Warren and Katharine Schlinger's steadfast dedication and commitment to scientific achievement, particularly at Caltech, are exemplary and visionary," states Caltech president Jean-Lou Chameau.
