December 1, 2008

The Medal of Distinction is the highest award bestowed by AIA Pennsylvania upon a living AIA Pennsylvania member. The recipient shall have made contributions to architecture that transcend local boundaries and have been of benefit to the profession and citizens of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

Peter Q. Bohlin, FAIA

Founding the practice in Wilkes-Barre in 1965, Mr. Bohlin has spent more than four decades improving the Northeastern Pennsylvania region, the Commonwealth and the world by stubbornly inspiring clients, colleagues and himself to do their very best.

His influence in Pennsylvania is prolific. The early practice emerged amid the 1972 Agnes Flood and prolonged economic adversity in Northeasern Pennsylvania. Steadfastly, it grew and performed, eventually touching Pennsylvania's most civic infrastructure, shaping its venerated universities, interpreting its history and celebrating its natural environment.

His idea of Architecture is integrative and additive, making the most of people, places, nature and the act of building. His approach to design makes us learn about ourselves, our culture and our environment. Behind all this lie his roots in Pennsylvania which inform the work he takes to the larger world. The residences Mr. Bohlin has designed have inspired many to see new ways of relating to the landscape. On over 50 campuses, students and researchers are stimulated by his places of learning. So are tourists at the Liberty Bell Center, Grand Teton National Discovery and Visitors Center, and at the Apple flagship stores across America, Europe and Asia.

Across an incredible array of environments, building types, scales, visual expressions and human circumstances, Peter Bohlin's career illustrates that Architecture is a full-bodied calling. He shows us that as a life work, it demands our best humanity, intellect, tenacity and community.

Mr. Bohlin received his Bachelor of Architecture at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and his Master of Architecture at Cranbrook Academy of Art. Bohlin Cywinski Jackson has offices in Wilkes Barre, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Seattle and San Francisco. The firm is the recipient of 8 National Honor Awards from The American Institute of Architects, as well as more than 360 other design awards. In 1994, the firm won the Architecture Firm Award, the AIA's highest honor recognizing an architectural practice. He has been a guest design critic, and visiting professor at a number of leading schools of architecture and frequently serves as a juror for national, regional and state design competitions.
