May 27, 2008,

Bohlin Cywinski Jackson announced the promotion of Roxanne Sherbeck and Robert Miller as Principals in the firm. Sherbeck will serve as Principal in BCJ's Pittsburgh office and focus primarily on design direction. As Principal, Miller will continue to design and manage projects in the firm's Seattle office.

"Roxanne and Robert have been instrumental in the advancement of the Seattle and Pittsburgh offices over many years," said Jon Jackson, Executive Vice President and Managing Principal. "We look forward to having their wisdom, creativity, and guidance contribute to the continued success of our practice as we move into the future."

Sherbeck came to the Pittsburgh office of BCJ in 1985 as a registered architect from Virginia. With a background in architecture and scenic and costume design, she has focused her efforts on the effective use of lighting and acoustics, as well as the interactions of form and color in creating well designed environments. Sherbeck directed the design efforts of numerous projects both locally and nationally, including the Harris Theater and the Winchester Thurston School's North Hills Campus in Pittsburgh as well as large laboratory buildings at the University of Washington, the University of California San Diego, and the University of Illinois. Her design of the Barn at Fallingwater, an interpretive portal for the Western Pennsylvania Conservancy's 5,000-acre nature reserve, was selected by the AIA Committee on the Environment as one of the Top Ten Green Projects in 2005. Sherbeck is currently designing laboratory and technology buildings at Caltech, Dartmouth College and the University of Virginia, as well as residential projects in Arizona, Montana, and in the North Hills area of Pittsburgh.

Miller first joined the Wilkes-Barre office of Bohlin Cywinski Jackson in 1988 with degrees in both architecture and environmental design. He quickly rose to management positions on projects ranging in scale from private residences to university buildings, master planning, and even a birdhouse. Miller moved to Seattle in 1990 to assist in the design of the winning entry in the Pacific Rim Residential Compound competition, completed as a joint venture with James Cutler Associates. Miller lead the project team for the Ballard Library and Neighborhood Service Center in Seattle, which has garnered a number of important design awards including the AIA National Honor Award and the AIA Committee on the Environment's Top Ten Green Projects for 2006. Miller also designed a line of "green" furniture for the Ballard Library. His designs, which were submitted for patent, were released for manufacturing and public sales. Early in 2008, the furniture was featured in an exhibit at the Portland Museum of Art in Maine. Miller's new series of architectural hardware is currently being manufactured and marketed.
