Ballard Library Receives 2008 EDRA/Places Award

March 26, 2008, Seattle, Washington

The Ballard Library has been named a winner of the 2008 EDRA/Places Awards in cooperation with Metropolis Magazine. Seven awards were given in the categories of Place Design, Place Planning, Place Research; a Book Award was also given.

The jury commented that the project has been enormously successful in setting the tone for the transformation of the Ballard neighborhood. On a recent visit there, one juror related, the levels of activity and interest in the building were tremendous. In particular, its use of energy-efficient technologies has raised people's appreciation for the benefits of integrating green design with simple, inspiring architectural form. The jury also noted how its design is deeply rooted in a Northwestern tradition, emphasizing the beauty of wood, and employing large areas of glass to capture sometimes scarce daylight. Finally, in its careful grouping of a variety of spaces literally "under one roof," it epitomized an inclusive spirit of design for the public realm.

Awards will be presented in May at EDRA's 34th annual meeting, in Veracruz, Mexico. Winning projects and commentary will be published in the Fall 2008 issue of Places.
